A New Year, A New Start: Providing School Supplies to Students in Ethiopia
As the Ethiopian New Year arrives in September, it also marks the start of a new school year. For many children, this should be a time of excitement—new classrooms, new lessons, and new dreams. But for thousands of children from low-income families, it comes with heavy financial burdens.
The problem isn’t a lack of ambition. It’s the rising cost of basic school supplies.
When we were in high school in Ethiopia, a single exercise book cost about 13 ETB. Today, that same book costs nearly 130 ETB, a tenfold increase. Something as simple as a notebook has become a luxury for families already struggling to make ends meet.
Our names are Abdulhafiz Muzyin and Abas Mohammed, and we are Computer Science students at Georgia State University. We were fortunate to continue our studies, and we want children in Ethiopia to have that same chance. That’s why we’ve started this campaign—to provide basic school supplies for 200 students. Our goal is to raise $15,000, which will ensure each child can walk into the classroom prepared, confident, and ready to learn.
What Your Support Provides
Each child will receive:
- a full school uniform with two shirts,
- a new pair of shoes,
- a new backpack,
- two packs of exercise books (24 pcs),
- a set of pens and pencils.
These are small items, but together they mean so much. They give children dignity, confidence, and the tools to focus on learning, not on what they’re missing.
How You Can Help
- Donate: Any amount makes a real difference. Even the smallest gift can put a book in a child’s hands.
- Share: Spread the word to your friends, family, and coworkers. The more people who know, the more children we can reach.
As Ethiopia celebrates a new year, let’s also give its children a reason to celebrate—a chance to start school with hope in their hearts and the supplies they need to succeed.
Together, we can fill their backpacks not just with books, but with possibility.
Your support means the world. Thank you for joining this campaign! ✏️
