Most of you know me on social media, although I'm not as interactive these days as I've been stressed, but if you don't, I'm Esther and mother to two wonderful children aged 16 and 9. I like to CTF occasionally, self-learn and help others when I can in between work.
About a month ago now, I was painting my son's room and went to bed like any other night, only to wake up and discover from my children that the downstairs flooded because of the insane storms in Minnesota.
How bad has the damage been?
- The carpet had to be pulled (both children's rooms, hallway and living room)
- A ton of clothing was destroyed
- All furniture/accessories and major appliances were non-salvageable (two children's beds/desks/dressers, bookshelves, computers/monitors, TV, washer/dryer etc... )
- Asbestos testing had to be done and 4 walls had to be cut open approx. 2-3 feet up
- All baseboards had been removed
- The sump pump had to be replaced
- There are still 2 valves that need to be replaced so water can be shut off here
- Some mold hit and they had to remediate this immediately
I just received the invoice and it's TWICE as much as the initial estimate. Insurance paid for half of the cleanup and will handle repairs, but it will not pay for the valve replacement to shut the water off from the house, or sump pump replacement I had to pay for (approximately $1,500). This leaves the remainder of everything around $6500 ($4600 for cleanup, $1500 for the sump pump replacement and new pipe valves so we can shut off the water and the remaining $900 will go to replacing items for my children that are depreciated and to fix the brakes on my car).
To make matters worse they are saying one of the bathrooms also has to go. The washer and dryer alone will end up being approximately $800 less then I originally spent, even though they are 3 years old and more expensive now. I do not have extra money or even savings to account for all this loss.
I have been just scraping by with little left after bills are paid since things got more expensive within the last few years, but this year has been substantially worse.
I'm exhausted, stressed and I could very much lose my home over this ordeal. Since this happened, a series of bad events also occurred:
- The brakes on my car need to be replaced
- My daughter has been hospitalized twice
- I passed out and fell face first into a night stand
I hate asking for help, but I really don't know what else to do. This money would provide safety and security for my family, for any upcoming expenses out of my range the company is charging me that insurance won't cover. It will help combat the inflation of items that were only a few years old so that I can actually replace them when the time comes. I will use a portion to also replace a rear brake on my car.
Any excess money will be used to go towards donations. If you have read this far, thank you for taking the time to do so. Even your words of encouragement have helped.
Thank you for taking the time to read this!
