We are heartbroken to share the passing of our mother, Esther Wanjiku Gitau Mwaura. She came to the United States from Kenya with almost nothing but her faith, her determination, and her belief that love is a responsibility. She was the kind of mother people pray for: selfless, strong, and generous beyond measure. Even while raising her children, Esther poured herself into her community, sometimes giving away nearly 40% of her income to support others who were struggling. She was our foundation. She was a light for so many.
Two years ago, while caring for her family through a difficult season, her own health began to decline. The diagnosis was Stage 4 colon cancer, which was already advanced and inoperable, and we were given a prognosis of six months. But she fought. She endured continuous chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, and pain no one should ever have to bear. Through all of it, she held onto her faith, her humor, and her instinct to care for others. Our family and community rallied around her, but the financial cost of her fight was staggering. Treatment, hospital stays, medications, and emergency care were only partially covered by marketplace insurance after she lost her job at the start of her illness. In her final days, she needed a specialist available only out of network, adding even more to the burden. We honored her final wishes and surrounded her with love as she transitioned.
Now, we are grieving the loss of the woman who held our world together, while also facing significant medical and funeral expenses. If you have ever loved your mother, been loved by someone like Esther, or believe in showing up for those who show up for everyone else, we are asking for your support. Thank you for your love, your generosity, and your care.
