Support Estela's Fight Against Leukemia!

When I picked up the call from my sister, Estela, her usual cheerful voice greeted me. She explained that she had gone to the ER for a work-up because her primary care physician indicated something looked off in her bloodwork. For a moment, I entertained the thought that she might be calling to share news of a pregnancy. However, she revealed that her bloodwork was all over the place: best case scenario, she had some kind of infection, but worst case scenario, leukemia. Even as she delivered this news, her voice remained unwavering. That's just Estela. No matter how daunting the situation, she stands firm, displaying an unshakable strength—a trait familiar to those closest to her.

Throughout my life, I've witnessed Estela achieve what many would consider impossible. She was the trailblazer in our family, the first to attend college and earn her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Not content with stopping there, she pursued a master's degree in education in counseling from Texas Christian University (TCU), securing a full-ride through a combination of scholarships, tuition assistance programs, and a graduate assistantship. And now, she's currently enrolled in nursing school through UTA's accelerated online BSN program. Estela's academic accomplishments speak volumes about her determination, fearlessness, and passion that permeate every aspect of her life. In the face of her diagnosis, she has approached it with grace, positivity, and strength, embodying the same spirit that has propelled her through her academic endeavors.

On Saturday, March 9th, Estela received confirmation of the devastating diagnosis of leukemia, specifically B-ALL (B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). To say that we were shocked would be an understatement. Our lives changed in an instant, and as we adjust to this new normal, we are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our family and friends. However, along with this diagnosis comes unexpected financial burdens. We humbly ask for any donation, large or small, to help alleviate the medical expenses that will accumulate over the next year or so of treatment Estela will undergo. Your contribution will make a significant difference in easing the financial strain on our family, allowing us to focus on Estela's well-being during this challenging time.

Cuando contesté la llamada de mi hermana, Estela, su voz alegre y habitual me saludó. Explicó que había ido a la sala de emergencias para una evaluación porque su médico de atención primaria indicó que algo parecía estar mal en sus análisis de sangre. Por un momento, consideré la posibilidad de que me estuviera llamando para compartir noticias sobre un embarazo. Sin embargo, reveló que sus análisis de sangre estaban descontrolados: en el mejor de los casos, tenía algún tipo de infección, pero en el peor de los casos, leucemia. Incluso al dar esta noticia, su voz permaneció firme. Así es Estela. No importa lo desalentadora que sea la situación, ella se mantiene firme, mostrando una fuerza inquebrantable, una característica familiar para aquellos más cercanos a ella.

A lo largo de mi vida, he sido testigo de cómo Estela logra lo que muchos considerarían imposible. Fue la pionera en nuestra familia, la primera en asistir a la universidad y obtener su licenciatura en psicología en la Universidad de Texas en Arlington (UTA). Sin conformarse con eso, cursó una maestría en educación en asesoramiento en la Universidad Cristiana de Texas (TCU), asegurando una beca completa a través de una combinación de becas, programas de asistencia financiera y una asistencia de posgrado. Y ahora, actualmente está inscrita en la escuela de enfermería a través del programa acelerado BSN en línea de UTA. Los logros académicos de Estela hablan volúmenes sobre su determinación, valentía y pasión que impregnan cada aspecto de su vida. El sábado 9 de marzo, Estela recibió la confirmación del devastador diagnóstico de leucemia, específicamente LLA-B (leucemia linfoblástica aguda de células B). Decir que nos sorprendió sería quedarse corto. Nuestras vidas cambiaron en un instante, y mientras nos ajustamos a esta nueva normalidad, estamos inmensamente agradecidos por el apoyo inquebrantable de nuestra familia y amigos. Sin embargo, junto con este diagnóstico vienen cargas financieras inesperadas. Humildemente pedimos cualquier donación, grande o pequeña, para ayudar a aliviar los gastos médicos que se acumularán durante el próximo año o más de tratamiento que Estela deberá recibir.
