He Beat Cancer at 18. Now It’s Back and More Aggressive.

As parents, there is nothing more terrifying than hearing your child has cancer.

We lived that nightmare when Esteban was only 18 years old.

He was just a boy. Responsible. Kind. Full of dreams.

Doctors told us the cure rate was 95%. We held onto that number like it was oxygen. While his friends were starting college and building their futures, our son was starting chemotherapy. Hospital rooms became his classroom. IV lines replaced textbooks.

No young man should have to trade his youth for survival.

The treatment was brutal. The fear never left our home. But Esteban fought with courage.

At the beginning of 2025, we were told he was in remission. We cried tears of relief. We believed the storm had finally passed.

He began to smile again.
He returned to teaching tennis, padel, and pickleball — the sport he loves.
He started rebuilding his life.
He began dreaming again.

He is also a big brother to four younger siblings — ages 12, 5, 3, and just 10 months old. They look up to him. They adore him. He has always tried to be strong for them.

We truly believed the nightmare was over.

Now we are back in the hospital.

Recent scans show metastatic cancer in his liver, lungs, and lymph nodes—the largest tumor in his liver measures over 12 centimeters.

This time, the doctor is acting urgently.

The same doctor who once spoke about a 95% cure rate can no longer give us a percentage. He cannot promise us anything.

And that silence is devastating.

The pain Esteban is experiencing has been overwhelming. His medications have already been changed three times because the pain is so severe. Some days, he can barely move. Watching him depend on us again is incredibly hard for him.

He looks at us and asks, “What now?”

And as parents, not having an answer breaks our hearts.

What many people may not know is that the first battle changed our family completely. We are still paying medical bills from his first treatment. We had to reduce our quality of life, move farther away to afford housing, and cut expenses in every possible way. That first diagnosis destabilized us deeply — emotionally and financially.

We never fully recovered.

And now we are facing a second, more aggressive fight.

We know some people may think, “Again?”

But cancer does not wait until you are ready.
It does not check if you are still recovering from the first battle.
It does not care if your heart can handle it twice.

We are asking for help because we truly cannot carry this alone.

Not because it is easy.
Not because it is comfortable.
But because our son’s life matters more than our pride.

Your support will help cover urgent medical treatments, hospital visits, medications, and help keep our family stable while we focus on his care and care for his younger siblings.

If you cannot donate, please share.
If nothing else, please pray.

Our son has already shown incredible strength once.

We are praying for another miracle.

With love and hope,
Mom and Dad

Volvió a sonreír.
Volvió a soñar.
