Growing up as a girl in a slum in southern Ghana, Esenam Amuzu witnessed the harsh realities faced by young women—stories of teenagers having abortions, 14-year-olds giving birth, and boys abusing their girlfriends. Many classmates dropped out of school after becoming pregnant, while others died seeking unsafe abortions. This was Esenam’s 'normal,' and it fueled her determination to change the future for girls in her country and region.
Esenam is a Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) champion from Ghana, with over 10 years of experience in adolescent and youth reproductive health, child rights, family planning, youth leadership, gender advocacy, and humanitarian work. Her work in gender equality and SRHR advocacy has earned her opportunities to represent women and youth voices on several national and international platforms, including the UN Commission on Population and Development convened by UNFPA HQ, the European Development Days, UN General Assembly and Summit of the Future, and the ECOSOC Youth Forum. She is a 2018 Women Deliver Young Leader, 2017 European Development Days Young Leader, and a Youth Trailblazer Awardee at the International Conference on Family Planning. Esenam is also a reporter with the Family Planning News Network, a media network of the W.H. Gates Sr. Institute at Johns Hopkins University, all attesting to her extensive engagement in advocacy both at the national and international levels.
Now, Esenam is ready to take the next step: pursuing a master’s degree in Global Health at Emory University. This program will equip her with advanced knowledge, research skills, and a global perspective to design and implement sustainable health interventions for women and girls in Africa and beyond. Despite partial scholarships, tuition fees, accommodation, research costs, and living expenses remain a challenge. By supporting this GoFundMe campaign, you can help Esenam make her vision a reality and empower her to create lasting change for girls and women in Ghana and across the world.
