I’m writing this with a heavy heart, but with a feeling of hope. On Monday, February 16th, just like any other day, I woke up to get ready for work. As my partner open our living room cirtaims, we soon realized this was unlike any other day. Because this day my car was gone.
My partner and I have lived in Chico for 4 years. This is considered a safe, warm and welcoming community. A place where we let our kids play without worry, and we can visit with our neighbors. This is a place where the walking trail and Lindo channel see people from everywhere, and they all have a wave and a smile ready to greet you.
However, February 16th changed my life. My car was gone, my heart sank and I immediately felt that “pit in the stomach”feeling that happens when danger is lurking. I contacted the police, and was informed that my vehicle had already been found. But, it wasn’t the same as it had been the night before. My hope was shattered, and my sense of self was violated. To be brutally honest , I felt targeted. “How could this happen?” I asked myself, “I’m always the one to help, the one people can come to when they need a safe space. Why me?”
As much as this hurt and as much as this has clouded my sense of safety, I have hope. Hope in community, and hope in those I’ve come to know over the years. And now, I’m asking for your help.
Due to the nature of the situation, and because the police have not fully solved the case yet, my insurance is holding me responsible for the deductible and for finding a new mode of transportation. This is where you come in. I’m asking for donations, so that I can get a vehicle to continue to work, support my family, and the community that I’ve come to love. Though this is a trying time, I truly believe in the power of people. When we come together, we show danger that it can’t take from us without giving something back.
I ask you to consider donating what you can to help me get back on my feet and put more money towards a new car. Anything and everything helps; if you can’t donate, share the link. I truly appreciate your help in this matter, and I look forward to connecting with all of you to show my appreciation.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
