My name is Alayna Powell, and I'm a fourth-year graduate student in the MFA program at the University of Alabama. I'm managing this GoFundMe for my dear friend, peer, and colleague, Ernest Ohia.
Ernest Ohia is a queer Nigerian poet and editor. He is an MFA candidate in poetry at the University of Alabama, where he serves as the Design Editor for Black Warrior Review. Ernest’s works are published and forthcoming in Lolwe, The Muse, 20:35 Africa, Agbowo, Rigorous, amongst others.
Ernie and I started the MFA program together in 2022. In the three years I've known him, I've witnessed the strength of his character and creativity. He is a passionate poet, painter, and multidisciplinary artist.
Ernie was invited to attend the Tin House Summer Workshop in July. The Tin House Summer Workshop is one of the most respected and competitive literary gatherings in the United States, held annually in Portland, Oregon. It's designed for writers (emerging and established) who are seeking to deepen their craft, build literary community, and engage critically with the art of writing. The workshop is a weeklong event marked by curated workshops, one-on-one meetings with faculty, craft lectures, student/faculty readings, author talks, and spaces for generative work and community.
As an international student, Ernie has limited sources for external funding.
The workshop fees include tuition, room, and board. There will also be travel expenses. The cost breakdown is included below.
- Tuition: $1800
- Room & Board: $700
- Travel: $500
Total cost = $3000
If you're able and willing, please consider donating to our fundraiser to help Ernie attend the Tin House Workshop and further develop his artistic practice. We appreciate all your help!
