Support Erin's Educational Career

My name is Erin Akinjide and I am an international voice from Nigeria. I am currently in my third year studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Product design at Drexel University.

Since I started pursuing my degree at Drexel University, I have had to find a way not only to excel as a student but also involve myself with all the other aspects that come with being at Drexel University.

This past term, I was awarded the Dean's List Distinction after earning A's in all my courses. I currently serve as the Public Relations chair of my National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter as well as the event coordinator for Every Nation Campus. I worked with the Green Infrastructure Unit of the Philadelphia Water Department for 6 months during my first internship experience, where we designed systems to reduce water pollution in the city.

Being in Drexel has shown me that with discipline it is also possible to build on my other interests outside of academia. These interests include my own Ankara clothing line, Èrín Apparel, which was featured in a fashion show this past November. I also occasionally participate in badminton club sports on campus.

I have only made it this far because of my resolve to not give up and my parent's grueling sacrifices at the expense of my siblings' education. I have continuously proven that I am capable of overcoming whatever challenge I face, whether it is as a black female in engineering, or as an international student from a developing country with limited resources.

If I have not registered for this current term, my F-1 visa status will be revoked and I would have to go back home.

I decided that studying engineering was the best choice for me when I realized that there are so many issues around me that require the knowledge that an engineering degree provides to be solved.

Basic things like constant electricity which was a fantasy to me as a child could be achieved and so much more could be done to improve the standard of living, but first I had to know how.
In order for me to solve the many problems in my home country, I need to successfully complete my undergraduate degree, so that I can go out and make a change.

I would greatly appreciate any help!
