Support Eric's Journey to Recovery

Donation protected
To know him is to love him. As close friends of Eric since his early college days, we can honestly say true affection was felt for him upon our first meeting. Eric is a generous soul who brings laughter, good company and a listening ear with him everywhere he goes. The type of person who wants to see you rise and will help get you there. Now he, more than ever, needs our help rising.
On December 9th, at a peak in his professional career, 50-year-old Eric suffered a stroke. His quick thinking made him go directly to urgent care where he was immediately transported to the ER at Mass General Hospital. He was given medication to help reverse the effects of a stroke, but he had a severe anaphylactic reaction. As a result, he was intubated and put on a ventilator and a feeding tube. He had another allergic reaction to another medication causing him to need a tracheostomy so that the intubation tube could be removed. By the end of 3 weeks, he was off the ventilator and finally transferred to Spaulding Rehab Hospital for intense physical, occupational and speech therapies. He entered the recovery journey with total left side paralysis, a trach, a feeding tube and the need for all hands on deck care. His parents were traveling back and forth from Atlanta to Boston where Eric was living and working, and now receiving his care.
Eric’s progress was slow and the insurance company began the push to move him to a subacute skilled nursing facility. Insurance no longer wanted to pay the high cost of the acute rehab. Doctors appealed his stay citing he still needed a higher level of nursing care because of the trach, feeding tube and total assist. Multiple family meetings, many setbacks, and endless phone calls with the insurance company ensued. Finally, they were able to get Eric off the trach and so the search for a subacute facility began. He was rejected from over 75 facilities in the Boston area due to the level of care he needed. With the help of a friend Eric was offered a bed at Emory's Budd Terrace in Atlanta where he is now close to family and friends. On Friday, February 23rd, three days after his 51st birthday, he was discharged from Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston and flown via Angel Med Flight to Atlanta, an expense not covered by insurance.
Doctors have stated that he will need several more months of inpatient care. Now his insurance has stopped paying for his inpatient care, which means all of his care moving forward is a full out-of-pocket expense. Private pay for his inpatient rehab is over $25,000 per month. Currently his parents have had to pack up his apartment in Boston and place his belongings in storage for an undetermined amount of time. Eric’s work has been beyond supportive, but we can’t determine when he will be able to return to work. The expenses are endless and increase with each passing day.
All funds received will go directly to his medical expenses, extended care needs, and continuous recovery efforts. Please help us to lift Eric up, just as he has done for so many. Thank you for taking the time to learn about this wonderful human being. A little bit of kindness goes a very long way. Kindness helps heal. We hope that you will consider donating and sharing this with others.
