Support Erica's Battle with Dermatomyositis

Donation protected
Hi there! My name is Erica and I have a rare and incurable autoimmune neuromuscular disorder called Dermatomyositis. Dermatomyositis is a disorder of the body’s connective tissues, which include tendons, ligaments and the collagen-based tissue that cover the ends of the muscles. This disease causes inflammation, pain and tenderness in the muscles, and even skin. Basically, the immune system gets confused and begins attacking healthy tissue.

As a result of this, I have become disabled and need to utilize mobility devices. I experience weakness in the arms, legs, shoulders and hips. I am in constant pain, have joint problems and chronic fatigue. I also have lung problems and become easily winded. I struggle to complete daily tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, opening things, climbing in and out of the shower, grocery shopping, etc. Also… I fall down… a lot. My disability is “dynamic”, which means the severity of my condition can vary, and living life has become very unpredictable. Unfortunately, this disease is complicated and there are no straightforward solutions.

Recently, via a stress fracture in my foot, we have discovered that I am not absorbing nutrients properly. This has resulted in the softening of my bones, which is a whole new issue we need to tackle. I was also diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in addition to the Dermatomyositis (about 25% of people with an autoimmune disease have a tendency to develop additional autoimmune diseases).

Currently, I am on a cocktail of medications, a steroid regimen, and immune suppressants to keep the symptoms at bay. With the help of slow, short walks and regular visits to Studio Barre (my biggest cheerleading squad), I am slowly regaining muscles and joint strength back. I may have to begin IVIG monthly treatments soon. The road to recovery is long.

I need your Help

I am reaching out to the community, family, and friends to help me catch up on medical expenses, obtain a better-quality wheelchair, and ensure I can continue receiving the necessary treatments and tests. I would like to start Physical Therapy, which has thus far been unattainable financially.

Even with the help of payment plans and insurance, my various hospital visits and treatment were (and continue to be) very expensive. Not to mention the cost of my mobility devices, alterations to my apartment to make it more accessible, medications, and living cost. Becoming chronically ill has been a tremendous hardship.

Any contribution, big or small, would mean the world to me and help me get closer to a healthier future
