Almost a year ago this upcoming November 9, 2025 my Mom’s husband, Eric Holder, received a kidney transplant (11/9/24) after almost 6 years of dialysis. It was the best news that they could’ve ever received.
Up until August 14, 2025 everything was fine. On Thursday, the 14th of August Eric became very lethargic and worsened through Saturday the 16th. On the morning of August 16th he awoke to a fever of 102 and fell and had to be rushed by ambulance to the hospital.
During his stay at the local hospital he received neglected care and luckily, as my Mom says, divine intervention from above happened. On August 20, 2025 Eric’s phone rang in the hospital, and at this point Eric was incoherent and unable to answer so my Mom answered and it was the transplant center in Charleston, SC wanting to adjust some of his meds. She proceeded to tell them what was going on and they said to get him to Charleston immediately.
Being that they live three hours away from Charleston, SC an ambulance wouldn’t have gotten him there fast enough so my mother had to have him air lifted down to the emergency room in Charleston so the transplant doctors could take care of him.
While my Mom was in transit to Charleston (which is a 3 hour drive) she received a phone call from the ER asking for permission to intubate Eric for he arrived in Charleston, SC in septic shock.
Eric spent 7 days on life support and a total of 24 days in the ICU. It was determined that he contracted legionnaires disease (pneumonia) and a fungal infection. Due to his body being immune suppressed because of his transplant it attacked his body with a vengeance. He was released to the transplant floor where he stayed for another week. After this he was released to an acute rehab facility (for his body was extremely de conditioned due to being in a bed for over 45 days) on September 19, 2025 which was supposed to be for 3 weeks and on October 2nd Eric was rushed back to the ER at MUSC in Charleston, SC a week early.
Eric is now back in the ICU at MUSC with now another infection. Throughout all of this his kidney from the transplant last year isn’t working. As of today he has been in the hospital for 53 days and we are not sure when he’ll be out.
Once he gets discharged he’ll have to go to a sub acute rehab facility for a lengthy stay to rebuild his strength and learn to stand and walk again and will need home care and therapy once he returns back home. He has a long, long road ahead of him, they both do.
Throughout all of these 53 days my Mom has been in a hotel with my youngest brother who has Down Syndrome. She has the expense of the hotel and meals for the 2 of them 3x’s a day which has added up to a substantial amount, not including the helicopter or all of the medical bills. They live 3 hours away so she can’t just go and see him daily so she’s been by his side the whole time.
This has been an awful journey for my Mom and her husband. I wanted to put this GoFundMe together for them to try to help take some of the financial burden off of them and to let them focus on Eric’s recovery.
I would so appreciate any support that anyone who see’s their story would like to offer. No amount is too little for it will be going to a worthy cause and helping out my Mom and her husband, Eric during this extremely difficult time in the lives.
I would be so grateful for any support!
