Support ER RNs Suspended for Defending Pt Safety!

In 2018, Ascension Health bought St. Joseph Medical Center, one of two community hospitals for Joliet and Will County. Since then, management has consistently downsized the hospital, busted the union, and refused to raise nurses' wages. In recent months, the situation has become critical with a mass exodus of nurses who can't afford to work there anymore. The short staffing due to low pay and poor working conditions at St. Joe's has also led to extremely hazardous patient conditions.

On Monday night, October 17th, ICU night nurses walked into a night shift with double the safe patient load for every nurse. See more about what happened here.

On Friday night, ER nurses on the night shift at St. Joe's walked into an ER with 51 patients and only 4 RNs scheduled when the ER should typically have 10-12 RNs. When nurses tried to demand the hospital bring more staff onto the shift, they were led out by security with no warning. See more about what happened here.

On Saturday, during a rally for these nurses, as they walked back into their next shift, these nurses were informed that they were being indefinitely suspended. These suspensions are blatant retaliation that violates these union nurses' contract protections and federal labor law. Their union, the Illinois Nurses Association, has already filed unfair labor practice charges against Ascension, but in the short term, we need to support these nurses in every way possible.
