As can be seen in the photo, there is an evident pollution issue in this Texas city. This city was founded during the oil boom in 1926 and at one time housed 800 oil derricks and 50,000 people. Present day, the city is home to 7 industrial facilities, each with its own combination of pollutant concerns, and 20,000 people. For years, I have attempted to help my town to no avail. I was able to set up an air monitor in the area for a few months before it stopped working. Unfortunately, I do not have the financial means to buy another monitor or do the proper sampling necessary to bring it to regulatory agencies.
To help this area, various sampling methods need to be implemented throughout the city. Water samples will be taken from all bodies of water and water sources in the area before being sent to a local third-party laboratory for a 32-compound analysis. Soil characteristics will be determined via a handheld measurement device and sample collection. The soil will be sent to a second third-party laboratory for detailed analysis. Multiple air quality monitors are necessary for the area including a Sulfur Dioxide monitor, a Particulate Matter monitor for varying sizes (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), Volatile Organic Compounds, Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide, and Formaldehyde sensors.
Each of these sampling and monitoring methods will be implemented for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years, depending on the severity of the situation. A portion of the funds will be utilized to help pay our field technicians for their time and commitment to the project despite the risks.
Our Experience:
The team leads hold a Bachelor's and Master's in Environment Engineering and Environmental Science. During their studies, the two committed to various research projects dedicated to better understanding environment/pollution interactions in the air, water, and soil. The two have over 8 years of research experience and have completed multiple environmental remediation/conservation projects.
