Hi, this is Emma Foster-Geering's 'Breast Friends' fundraising for our dear friend.
We were lucky enough to meet Emma through work during her time living in England and Germany. To know her is to love her; she is warm, friendly, firey, loyal, kind, terrifying if you cross her and honest to a fault. That was over 11 years ago, and she has since moved back home to Australia to raise her little boy Archie and continue her work in the sustainability space.
At the start of this year, after suffering a second devastating miscarriage, she discovered that she has breast cancer. An aggressive one. It's HER2+ and at stage 2/3, invasive and fast growing. She tells us it's treatable (it reacts well to the drugs they give) but treatment is equally aggressive: 6 months of chemo, followed by a mastectomy, and the rest is tbc but could include another mastectomy, having her ovaries removed, radiotherapy, hormone therapy and reconstructive surgery. It's a lot, and she's only 37, it all feels horrible and unfair.
Like many of her other friends, we are desperate to help, but we don't know how. It feels helpless to be on the other side of the world when all you want to do is give Emma a hug, take her for a walk, help with babysitting or be there during her treatment. Unfortunately flying across the world and inviting ourselves for a visit isn't appropriate at this moment.
I know that medical bills are a huge strain, especially after losing your income, so we started this page to see if we could all help. If you would want to buy Emma a coffee, a ticket to the zoo (actually she's actually pretty good at blagging herself free one's there!) or chip in for some childcare for when she's feeling rough, perhaps, together, we can all help lighten a little of her heavy load.
Her chemotherapy journey starts tomorrow on 5th March, and if you want to follow along on her journey you can read her blog here: https://www.emmafostergeering.com/blog
Thank you all xx
