If you have ever met Emily Menne, you know that she is a ball of pure sunshine. She has a loud, infectious laugh and brings a joyful energy to every occasion. Emily cares deeply for her friends, her family, and her beloved pets Ole and Stevie, and she never fails to show up for marginalized members of her community. She loves hiking, traveling, and dancing (at raves, concerts, and festivals, to everything from electronic music to System of a Down). Almost nothing gets Emily down, but the last few months have been particularly hard ones for her, and she is expecting a difficult start to 2025.
What's going on?
On December 30, 2024, Emily will be undergoing surgery to remove a screw that has been sticking out her pelvis and causing her extreme pain -- originally the result of a nearly fatal hit-and-run collision in August 2022. She expects to be out of work (Emily works as a server at a restaurant) for over a month as she recovers. Consequently, she will be missing the income she needs to pay rent, buy food and other essentials, care for her beloved animals, and purchase necessary medications. On top of everything, she will lose her health insurance on January 1, making any post-surgery check-ups and medical visits very expensive.
We are raising funds to support Emily during this difficult time until she is back on her feet and able to resume her work as a full-time server. Please consider donating to help this lovely human through a difficult and stressful healing period!
Background: a traumatic hit-and-run
Emily was the unfortunate victim of a serious hit and run car accident on August 26, 2022. This resulted in a long hospital stay, as the collision broke her pelvis, several of her ribs, and the left side of her pubic bone. Her left lung collapsed twice, she got sepsis and pneumonia in the hospital, and she experienced lacerations to her spleen that cause her to be more susceptible to illness for the rest of her life. After being released from the hospital, she spent a year in physical therapy re-learning how to walk; everyday tasks like showering were incredibly difficult. Because the driver at fault fled from the scene, Emily was unable to collect the payout she deserved from that person's insurance and had to go back to work before she was fully healed in order to make ends meet.

The pain resurfaces
During her initial hospital stay, Emily underwent several major surgeries, including one that implanted a very large screw through her pelvic bone. A little more than two years later, around October 2024, Emily started feeling extreme pain in her pelvis. This pain limited her from doing the activities she loved and made it difficult to work, take care of her pets, or even leave the house. An x-ray revealed that one of the screws in her pelvis has loosened and is protruding from her bone. As a result, her doctor suggested yet another surgery to remove the screw entirely and stretch out the pelvic bone and muscles so that she can be mobile again.
This surgery will help Emily to feel better and will hopefully allow her to put the accident behind her for good. Let's make her recovery period as positive as possible by removing any financial burdens! Thanks for your kindness and support!
