Support America's Future Civil Rights Attorney
Hi, I’m Emily.
Ever since high school, I’ve dreamed of becoming an attorney. But life had other plans when my mom suffered a stroke when I was just 14. Overnight, I became the woman of the house—raising my nephew and caring for my mom while trying to stay afloat in school. Today, that same nephew is a proud U.S. Marine. My mom, who inspired and motivated me through everything, sadly passed away during my second year of law school in 2021.
Attending law school during COVID-19 changed the experience dramatically, bringing both new challenges and new perspectives. But between the pandemic and my mother’s passing, it took a real toll—especially on my bar exam performance.
I moved to Portland with the hope of becoming licensed through Oregon’s Supervised Practice Portfolio Exam (SPPE)—a bar exam alternative for law grads who gain experience under a supervising attorney. It's a promising path, but without the right connections in the legal community, getting started has been tougher than I imagined.
Now, I’m preparing to take the bar exam again—my fourth and final attempt—and I need your help.
The photo for this fundraiser is of me and my dad, taken a year after my mom passed away at my law school graduation dinner. We’ve been through a lot together, and he’s always been my constant source of support. Preparing for the bar exam has shown me just how much it truly takes a village. By supporting me, you’re helping a hard working Black man who sacrificed so much his daughter retire!
Why I’m asking for help:
Studying for the bar is a full-time job. To give myself the best chance, I’m taking the bar exam in Utah, where the pass rate is high (88%) and the minimum score is more attainable (260). To keep costs low, I’m driving there from Portland.
Your donation will help cover:
Hotel stay during the bar exam
Travel expenses (gas, food, etc.)
Two months worth of recurring bills
In the meantime, I am offering virtual income based tutoring services, house sitting and pet sitting for the summer. My application with Lyft is also pending.
Thank you for reading, for sharing, and for believing in me.
With deep gratitude,
Emily Alyce Joubert, J.D. M.A.
