Emily Shelton is the 21-year-old Certified Flight Instructor who piloted her plane to safely land on I-10 on Monday, Aug. 3, in Pensacola, Florida, after an engine failure during a teaching flight. How she landed was nothing short of miraculous, as she narrowly avoided traffic and other obstacles and managed to guide the plane to the shoulder of the road, protecting her student and motorists.

Emily has been working as a flight instructor to build her hours while working toward becoming a pilot at a regional airline.

While her flight training is complete, flight school costs over $100,000, and there are no federal education loans available. All loans are private and come with a steep interest rate of 8% to 16%. Students graduate and are then hired as instructors, making roughly $35,000 to $45,000 a year. That barely covers the interest on the loans. Pilots like Emily live off very little money while building their hours and experience for the next step in their career, which often takes 2 to 4 years.
