Hi everyone, I’m posting this on behalf of my cousins and their family, who are going through something no family should ever have to face. On February 4th 2026, my cousin Emily, her husband Chad and their 4 children had their lives turned upside down after what should have been a routine remediation process. Because of extreme contractor negligence and serious chemical contamination, their home became unsafe to live in, forcing their family of six out of the house indefinitely. There currently is no end in sight, and the toxic chemicals are slowly eating away at their entire home and all their belongings.
Since then, they’ve been living with family, in temporary housing (hotel/Airbnb), moving from place to place while trying to keep some sense of stability and normalcy for their teenagers and toddlers. The chemical exposure also caused health issues, including hospitalization from chemical exposure, asthma attacks, recurring bloody noses in the children, and chemical burns to their skin and faces. They are now facing mounting bills on top of everything else while trying to detox their bodies.
To make things even harder, their insurance company denied coverage because “contractor negligence” is excluded under their policy, leaving them to carry this overwhelming financial burden entirely on their own. They have already spent tens of thousands of dollars on temporary housing, storage, food, travel, replacing everyday essentials, inspections, chemical/air testing, legal expenses, and medical costs. All of these expenses continue to come out of pocket, while they continue to pay the mortgage on a home they cannot safely return to. Watching them go through this has been heartbreaking. They are doing everything they can to protect their children, pursue accountability, and rebuild their lives, but the costs continue to grow faster than they can manage alone.
