Back in 2003, during my Peace Corps service, I was welcomed into a home that became so much more than a place to stay—I gained a family.
My host family treated me like one of their own, sharing their meals, their culture, their laughter, and their lives with me. The love and generosity they showed me created a bond that has lasted more than two decades. They meant so much to me that when my husband and I traveled the world in 2018, we made sure to visit all of them because some connections transcend time and distance.
Now, this family is facing challenges that no one should have to endure alone.
In the video I shared, you can hear from Emilio as he tells us more about his family and their story from these past two years.
During the pandemic, they lost their son, Deymar. Emilio's wife fell into a deep depression, struggling to cope with the unbearable loss. As she grieved, her sister and mother also passed away, compounding her pain. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with cancer, adding a devastating medical battle to the emotional trauma they've already endured.
Between mounting medical bills, the inability to work, and the weight of their grief, they have exhausted their savings. They're facing each day doing their best to simply keep going, but the financial burden is overwhelming.
This family opened their home and hearts to me when I needed them most. Now I'm asking for your help to support them in their darkest time. Your donation will go directly toward medical expenses and living costs while they focus on healing and getting back on their feet.
Any amount—whatever you're willing and able to give—will make a real difference in their lives. If you're unable to contribute financially, sharing their story means the world.
Thank you for helping me give back to the family who gave me so much.
