OUR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN IS OVER - THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS CONTRIBUTED AND SPREAD THE WORD!

Emergency Committee for Rojava was founded in January 2018, in response to Turkey invading the northwest region of Rojava known as Afrin. Almost overnight, this invasion displaced 200,000 Kurdish people. They fled bombing by the Turkish air force, including the shelling of hospitals, and water treatment plants, many with just the clothes on their backs. Thousands of them still sleep in open air refugee camps. All of this began and continues with the tacit approval of the US and the EU despite the fact that the Kurds were the major force defeating ISIS sacrificing thousands of lives on the way. Trump’s most recent decision to withdraw troops in October 2019, from the Kurdish areas has been equally catastrophic: Turkish-supported militias have now moved into other parts of Rojava, where they have displaced tens of thousands of people and engaged in atrocities and war crimes.
At the Emergency Committee for Rojava, we aim to stop Turkey’s ongoing attacks and human rights violations against the Kurds and other minorities because this region provides an extraordinary beacon of hope and democracy in the Middle East and beyond. Founded on women’s liberation, ecological sustainability, and direct democracy, Rojava’s political system provides a dramatic alternative to the status quo values of patriarchy, capitalism, and the nation-state that define the Middle East and much of the world. From its official founding in 2012, Rojava has ensured the participation of women and minorities in every aspect of social and political life, with laws that ensure women serve as co-chairs and make up at least 40 percent of all elected bodies at every level of government. While this experiment is rooted in the Kurdish struggle, Rojava is also home to Arabs, Syriacs, Christians, Yazidis – 5 million people in all. Together, the residents of Rojava have charted a path towards an inclusive, ecologically sustainable, and profoundly democratic system of governance.
We seek to support the people and ideas of this region. We’re a group of volunteers building a nation-wide organization – and we need your help. We’ve hosted public forums, spoken at college campuses, and pressed US politicians to demand that the Kurds be included in negotiations on the future of Syria. As one of the leading Rojava support groups in North America, our articles, letters, and commentaries have been published in places like the New York Times and Foreign Affairs, and we’ve been interviewed by outlets like MSNBC and Democracy Now! But in response to the mounting dangers facing Rojava, we must intensify our efforts.
We need to hire someone to help coordinate our dedicated team of volunteers, to create educational materials, expand outreach efforts, organize aid fundraisers, and advocate for Rojava with our elected officials. That’s where you come in. With your help, we can continue defending Rojava, a brilliant yet besieged example of an egalitarian model of governance. No contribution is too small and because we are a 501©3 organization, all contributions are tax deductible. We appreciate anything you can give. Thank you for your support, and may the year ahead bring us justice and peace.
