We ask you to please read the story below and consider supporting this special family:
I would like to take the time to update and resend my original post about my dear friend, Alisa Choun and her family. Elym’s levels have dropped significantly and the most recent biopsy showed that he needs a bone marrow transplant. This means the upcoming holidays are going to be very different and challenging for their family. Please consider donating below and also include them in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this. Thank you in advance for your support and the Choun family is so grateful to those who have helped!
This is written about our dear friend, Alisa Choun’s son Elym who just turned 13 this summer. He was an active, sports-loving kid that started feeling sick while at track practice in late May. After losing sight in one eye, his parents, Alisa and Yor took him to the emergency room at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was admitted and after testing, the doctors discovered due to a virus Elym’s body started fighting his own cells. Shortly after he was diagnosed with a rare disease called, Severe Aplastic Anemia. He will need a bone marrow transplant at the end of August if his levels do not improve. In addition, finding a bone marrow match has been difficult due to the fact that his mother is Caucasian and his father is Cambodian. Elym has spent his summer in and out of the hospital getting weekly blood transfusions, needles, pokes and endless hours of sitting.
We are asking for your help and support in different ways.
1. Text fightforblood to 61474 to have a kit sent to you with a swab test included to see if you are a match for Elym.
2. Donate to the GoFundMe. The Choun family has had many unplanned expenses for Elym due to multiple stays in the hospital including medication costs, medical bills, parking ramp tickets, extra supplies needed and more.
3. Pray, think positive thoughts and hold the Choun family in your heart during this difficult time.
4. And… please pass this along to other family members and friends so we can share Elym’s story to help receive as much support as possible.
Thank you so much for considering and to those who have already shown support. The Choun family is grateful for anything as they are just trying to make it through this and trust that God has a plan.
