Support a Long Beach Family Impacted by ICE

Elvia is a friend and valued community member. A resident of Long Beach resident and a single mother raising three daughters from Ecuador.

Nearly three months ago, Elvia took her daughters to a routine ICE check-in. Her oldest, 21, was taken into custody there and sent to the Adelanto Detention Center. Elvia went home that day with only two of her three daughters.

Elvia hired an attorney herself. That attorney filed a federal petition challenging the detention, and her daughter was released this week, after almost three months in custody. The fear this family has lived with does not end with her release. Three months of not knowing leaves a mark on a mother and on her girls, their fight is far from over.

Despite meeting all requirements and never missing an appointment, Elvia and her 18-year-old daughter have to wear ankle monitors — her 18-year-old crossed the stage at her high school graduation wearing one. What should have been one of the proudest days of her life came with that reminder strapped to her ankle.

Elvia and her daughters crossed the Darién Gap — one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world — to seek asylum here. They survived that journey together, carrying it with them. Now they are fighting to stay together in the U.S. Like any parent, Elvia is doing everything she can to protect her children and keep her family together through a situation no family should have to face alone.
