ElTaino and I met through the East Bay Meditation Center decades ago, and I’ve come to know them as a caring, resilient, and witty friend. Right now, ElTaino is facing one of the most challenging moments of their life. They are pregnant and preparing to welcome their child, but recently learned that their baby has a congenital heart condition. This diagnosis means their child will need long-term care and a series of surgeries, with the first operation scheduled within just three days of birth, and a second surgery planned for when the baby is six months old.

To give their child the best possible chance, ElTaino will be traveling to Philadelphia’s Children’s Hospital, where some of the top NICU surgeons can provide the specialized care their baby needs. However, this journey comes with immense emotional and financial stress. The most pressing need right now is help covering three months of rent while ElTaino is on maternity leave along with food costs. This support will allow them to focus entirely on their child’s recovery and well-being, without the added worry of housing or food insecurity during such a critical time.
