This little miracle hasn't had the easiest start to life. Elliott was born premature at 33 weeks gestation. He overcame a brain bleed, air pockets in his lungs and by his heart, bradycardia episodes, high bilirubin levels, and was able to maintain his body temperature, eat with a bottle and gained enough weight to be sent home from NICU all within 15 days!
He had been home for 2.5 weeks when he started to have really labored breathing. His parents took him to the ER here in Swift Current to be checked out, doctors there agreed that this was not normal and admitted him. They spent 4 days in hospital where he had blood work and swabs taken for testing to rule out RSV, bronchiolitis, and any other respiratory infections. He was hooked up to oxygen and was given nebulizers to help his lungs and bronchioles open up and within those few days he was sounding 100% better so they were discharged.
They were hoping that that would be the last hospital stay but a few days after being back home his labored breathing began again. Back to the ER they went. Elliott was readmitted. They gave him chest X-rays and put him back on oxygen and nebulizers. During his reassessment they were told that a mucus duct kept getting plugged in his lung causing a portion of his lung to collapse which is what is making it so hard for him to breathe. They were told he would just have to grow out of it but would like to keep him a few more days for observation to make sure he would be stable enough to go home.
Tuesday March 7th, in his assessment they found that his hemoglobin levels plummeted from 120 to 85, they say that this could also be affecting his breathing so he is received a blood transfusion. Unfortunately the blood did not help his breathing and they were transferred via ambulance to Regina.
The most recent update from Regina doctors is that he has small inflamed sinuses, viral lung infection and a chronic lung disease that he will hopefully grow out but he will be prone to asthma, and infections.
Elliott and his mom and dad will be continuing to stay in Regina until he can be without oxygen or they send him home with oxygen.
This young couple has spent the better part of the last 3 months in hospitals. They have another substantial ambulance bill coming their way, and have endured all kinds of extra costs. Having a new baby is stressful in its own right let alone having a preterm baby with serious respiratory issues. They have managed to stay positive and the strength they have shown is remarkable. Although exhausted and desperate to be home the love they have for their little man is nothing short of incredible. Any donation to this courageous little family would be greatly appreciated. ❤️
