On October 14th, Ellie was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer. The type of cancer is carcinosarcoma (MMMT). Needless to say, we were devastated and very caught off guard by this and our whole life has since dramatically pivoted. Carcinosarcoma is very rare, aggressive and resistant to treatment. The cancer has spread to Ellie's lymph nodes, the lining of her colon, and various other organs.
There will be significant costs for Ellie’s ongoing care. Ellie was self-employed and is no longer able to work in any capacity. Although Joel continues to work full time, he has used all of his paid time off, and his income alone does not cover their household expenses.
Many of the treatments Ellie needs to manage pain, maintain strength, and preserve her quality of life are not covered by insurance, including integrative therapies, specialized services, and additional pain management support. Even for the services that are covered, the co-pays are significant and add up quickly. Palliative and hospice care are only covered for three hours a week, leaving large gaps in daily support. Any contribution will go directly toward Ellie’s care and comfort.
