On March 16th, 2020, the unthinkable happened to our youngest sister, Elise Scheu. At the young age of 34, she suffered a severe stroke, which left her temporarily hospitalized. She has since been able to return home and is slowly regaining her ability to speak as well as the use of her right arm again. We are so thankful she survived this ordeal and was able to return home to her two young sons. However, there is a long road ahead for her and her family including follow-up care from specialists, therapy and medications.
For those of you that know Elise, you know that her heart is as big as the world and her infectious laugh can be heard from a mile away. She’s always ready with a joke, known for being strong-willed, steady and reliable. Her boys mean the world to her; there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her Max and Hammie. It’s so hard to see her go through this, so we’re trying to do all we can as a family to help.
During her hospitalization, tests revealed that she has moyamoya disease – a rare blood vessel disorder in which the carotid artery in the skull becomes blocked or narrowed, reducing blood flow to the brain, resulting in hemorrhaging and stroke. You can find out more about it here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/moyamoya-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20355586. This diagnosis means she will need to seek ongoing expert neurological care and eventually undergo brain surgery to attempt to relieve the pressure in her carotid artery.
At the time of her stroke, she was uninsured; she also owns her own housekeeping business, which she is no longer physically capable of doing after this awful incident. In order to help her family through this difficult time, we are asking for assistance in supporting her and her two boys. In addition to the mounting medical bills for treatment she has already received, she will require continuing care for her condition and eventual brain surgery. Our goal is to be able to attend to her and her family’s regular costs of living so she can focus on recovery, as well as have some much-needed funds for medical expenses.
Please consider helping us support our little sister in beating this disease so she can continue to be the amazing mom that she is to her kids. Every bit helps, so please give what you can… and if you can’t, please share this story with others and keep her family in your prayers!
Funds collected will be used to cover:
- Monthly living expenses for her and her family so she can rest and recover
- Medical bills from hospitalization for stroke
- Medical bills for ongoing recovery and care – PT, OT, Neurology, medication
- Medical bills and travel to neurovascular specialists for brain surgery
