Our lives changed in an instant. Elijah is just 17 years old and was looking forward to college, making plans, and starting his life. In a moment that should have never happened, he was critically injured when he was hit by a car that failed to stop at a stop sign. He suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, and since that moment, everything has been uncertain.
Elijah is currently in the ICU, where doctors and nurses are working around the clock to stabilize him and give him the best possible chance at recovery. Over the past days, there have been small but incredibly meaningful signs of progress—movements of his arms, hands, and fingers that remind us Elijah is still fighting. These moments bring hope to everyone who loves him, but we know this is just the beginning of a long and difficult journey.
Traumatic brain injuries are complex and unpredictable. Elijah will need continued critical care, followed by extensive rehabilitation, therapy, and long-term support. One of the most critical next steps in his recovery will be transferring him to a specialized Disorders of Consciousness (D.O.C.) facility. Unfortunately, Washington does not have a facility that can provide the level of care he needs, so we will need to send Elijah out of state. This specialized care represents his best chance at meaningful recovery.
The road ahead will be challenging—not only emotionally, but financially as well. The costs associated with long-term care, rehabilitation, out-of-state medical transport, and housing for family will be significant.
