For many years, Elder Dorothy Goodeye has supported some of the most marginalized members on Sylix territory in the Kelowna area. Now she needs our help.
Elder Dorothy brings both lived experience and cultural knowledge to her work. Having experienced homelessness herself and supported many family and community members through substance use challenges, she has become a trusted Elder, mentor, and advocate. She meets people without judgment and helps them reconnect with culture, identity, and community.
For years, Dorothy has supported Indigenous people, people experiencing homelessness, and people navigating substance use challenges on Syilx territory. She is a founding member of the Lived Experience Circle on Homelessness, an Elder and cultural support with the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Centre and KANDU, and a Project Elder with research led by the First Nations Health Authority and the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research. She also supports First Nations Lifegivers and families at Tupa’s Lodge, teaches cultural safety to nursing students, and teaches Cree language.
Right now Dorothy has fallen behind on rent and is at risk of losing stable housing. Our goal is to raise $5000, to help cover her rent and bills so she can continue the work she has dedicated her life to.
Elders hold knowledge, culture, and community together. Dorothy has shown up for so many people in their hardest moments. This is a chance for the community to show up for her.
Any contribution, large or small, will help ensure Dorothy has safe housing and stability during this time. If you are not able to donate, sharing this fundraiser can also make a meaningful difference.
My name is Brittany, I'm a scientist with the FNHA and have had the good fortune of being in Elder Dorothy's sphere of influence for the past 6 years. 100% of funds raised will go directly to pay Elder Dorothy's bills. Thank you for helping support Elder Dorothy Goodeye.
