I'm Elaine Udell and I’m 29 years old. On June 17th, I was hospitalized with a moderate to severe bilateral pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs) and with the position its in, it’s putting extra pressure on the right side of the heart. One of the internal medicine doctors that dealt with me told me that if I would’ve waited any longer to get checked, I probably wouldn’t be here today. Hearing this news, I was very emotional. In addition to the blood clots, my blood sugar has been high and I’m currently on insulin. However, this is not my first rodeo with blood clots, I have had a massive DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in my right leg and a smaller pulmonary embolism about 11 years ago. And it was during that time when I found out I have Factor V Leiden which is a gene mutation which makes me prone to blood clots.

Since the recent diagnosed pulmonary embolism I have been off of work and therefore unable to support my family.

This situation has been overwhelming for me because we were not prepared for this— emotionally or financially — and are now facing the costs of medical bills as well as our everyday expenses.
