Support Eileen's Legacy Farm Dream
Donation protected
I recently had the privilege of visiting this special homestead/farm near Rutherfordton, NC, where my friend Eileen works with rescue horses (both here and at a sanctuary down the road.) I’m a big believer in the work she is doing, hence wanting to share about it (with her permission.)
For over a decade Eileen has specialized in helping horses and their people (owners, riders) build rapport that is restorative, empowering, and mindful of each horse’s unique makeup. As a trainer working specifically with rescue animals, she finds ways to engage with horses who would otherwise be written off due to physical or behavioral complications. And as a trainer dedicated to land stewardship and soul care, Eileen nurtures environments where the dynamics of "rescue" and "relief" can flow in every direction. (In other words, it's not only humans caring for horses. The benefits go many ways.)
Those of you who know Eileen know that she and her family just relocated from New Orleans to North Carolina following the loss of their husband/father Todd to illness. When I ask Eileen about her dreams for this fledgling farm, her response is immediate: she wants Legacy Farm to be "a pilgrim's rest" where people can come and stay, unplug, work with their hands, be close to nature, interact with horses, play music (may I recommend the Saturday evening jam sessions?), and find respite amid struggles of all sorts (addiction, grief, weariness.) Eileen speaks of this as a future dream, but I can attest that it's already happening. The groundwork is there.
Right now, the farm consists of Eileen, her son Michael, a rescue pony (Pebbles), a rescue thoroughbred (Buddy), a camper, a tiny off-grid cabin, RV hookups, a chicken coop, a raised-bed garden, a paddock, fruit tree saplings, and a blueberry patch.
The goal moving forward is to build a farmhouse, horse stalls, proper fencing, and a riding arena. But first to recover from Hurricane Helene. During the storm, the farm took a hit: thankfully the animals, people, and tractor all fared okay, but trees fell on the storage shed, and Eileen & Michael’s home took on water. So some support is also needed for disaster relief.
I hope this provides an update and opportunity to support a friend and beloved family if you’re able. And I hope that anyone else who feels compelled will hop right in. And know that your contribution of any amount is greatly appreciated!
