Hello my dear friends, you might recognise me as the guy you've seen taking photos around a circus or acro convention, maybe performing one of my circus shows, or possibly having fun and sharing some acro moments.
For those of you who remember my face but don't know me, I'm Edson Caballero- a Mexican circus performer and photojournalist.
And I have a dream, I want to become a certified SAFE Acroyoga Teacher!
I got into the circus world through my photography. I was a professional photojournalist for more than 7 years. I won awards like Picture of the Year for Latin America and was also selected for an honourable mention at the Mexican Bienal of Photography.
At some point in my career I bumped into some circus people and wanted to learn how to take better photographs of the performers. For this reason I started to juggle, to train acrobatics and aerial disciplines, especially trapeze. This passion led me to start travelling to take photographs for, and participate in, the European Juggling Convention, the Phoenix Fire Convention, the Mexican Circus Convention, the Netherlands juggling festivals, and many many other events around Mexico and Europe. You might have just seen me at the Edinburgh Fringe, The FLYHigh Convention the MexAcro and at European Acro.
I performed my first acro routine on stage in 2015, and I got crazy about acro. It wasn't till 2018 that I got the chance to assist in an acroyoga workshop in the north of the UK, and I became fascinated by how fun and challenging L base flow could be- it was a totally different game to any kind of standing Acrobatics I had done before, so during 2020, when COVID sent me back to Mexico, I started for everyone I could to learn and play acroyoga with, like the guys from Acrocosmos, and i also got the chance to teach some begginers workshops in my home town in the north of México
Last year I made my way back into circus life working in the UK, and I got to meet the amazing London and British acrobatics community who have welcomed me into their lives and practices in such a charming way!
This December I'll be back in México as my contract finishes in the UK.
It got me thinking about what I would really like to do next in my life and I decided I'd love to become a certified Acroyoga teacher!
For the first step towards this, I hope to participate in the SAFE Acrobatics program in Slovenia. They run the course for the whole of August in a stunning location in the mountains.
Now, for the challenge. As a full time circus performer, I make most of my money for the entire year during the summer, so attending this Teacher Training course would basically mean that I won't be earning the bulk of my income for 2023,... and I still have to pay for the program!
The teacher training course that I aim to do costs around 3500 euros, it includes accommodation and food, plus all the classes for a full month, it is a really reasonable price for something amazing. That said, even with all the money I have managed to save while I have been working here, 3500 euros translates into something like 70000 pesos, and I still have to cover my flights and travel expenses and find a way to support myself in Mexico until the course begins.
I need to have almost 90 thousands pesos available to pursue this dream... significantly more than my entire life savings! It is challenging and its a big commitment... and I've decided to make it happen. I have lots of plans lined up and I am enthusiastically offering my services as a photographer, performer, coach... you name it- I'm willing!
I have also decided to try crowd funding so if you feel like, "yeah, Edson would be an amazing Acro Teacher!", I would really appreciate any kind of support
Instead of shouting me a beer, send me a five note bill!
One of the things I love the most about the acro community around the world is that the people is super nice, friendly and supportive, so I'm really positive about making this dream come true!
I would like to thank you all in advance for the time you've taken to read this, and for any support you can offer!
Big hugs from your Mexican Acro/Circus Amigo
