Support Eben's Journey to Recovery

On Monday May 26, our beautiful baby boy Eben started showing signs of having caught a cold from a sibling. At first, it was simply some sniffles and a little raspiness. By Tuesday, he had gotten a little worse but nothing too worrisome. His breathing began to get worse throughout the day on Tuesday, and by early Wednesday morning we made the decision to take him to the emergency room at Eastern Maine Medical Center to be examined. The pediatric team decided during that visit that it was best to admit Eben to the pediatric wing for monitoring in case things got worse. Eben spent the Wednesday in the pediatric wing, until early Thursday morning when his oxygen saturation dipped down into the sixties. At that point, he was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit and placed on a special oxygen machine to help keep his oxygen where it should be. His ability to take a breath and exhale still continued to deteriorate, to the point where we felt that we might lose our boy. The decision was made Thursday afternoon to intubate and place Eben on a ventilator. During the intubation, the medical team could not get the tube in place due to an obstruction in his airway, which they believe could be a genetic abnormality in the structure of his airway due to his down syndrome. They called a code and we watched in horror as they performed CPR to keep him alive long enough to be able to get a smaller tube in place and get his lungs working again with the ventilator. Once he was stabilized, the doctors informed us that they would like to send him to Boston Children’s Hospital to be seen by pediatric ENT doctors to find the issue with his airway, fix it and hope that they’re able to get us our happy, smiley baby boy back. Eben is awaiting his helicopter ride to Boston as I write this this morning, which is scheduled to take place at 7:30. We typically would never ask for help this way, but with Dad being out of work and the sole income for our family, bills are still going to come while we are by our sweet boy’s side in Boston. Any money raised will go directly to travel/housing expenses, medical expenses etc. We understand that not everyone is in a place where they are able to donate, but please share this for us. That helps so much as well! Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers, we could certainly use them. This is a very scary time for us, but we will get through it together. Thank you all in advance for any help you may offer.
