Dwight is a dedicated small business owner and a friend who has poured his heart into running a restaurant in George Floyd Square. Over the last five years, the neighborhood has faced immense challenges, especially after the tragic death of George Floyd. The area, once lively and full of hope, has seen a major drop in foot traffic, which is the lifeblood of small businesses like Dwight’s. Walk-in customers bring discovery, impulse purchases, and the word-of-mouth that keeps local businesses visible and afloat. Unfortunately, as the city reviews the district, the importance of steady foot traffic is often overlooked. Even strong, established businesses are struggling to survive without it.

At the same time, the neighborhood has experienced rising homelessness and increased drug-related activity, making it even harder for small businesses to thrive. The decline in safety and the changing appearance of the surroundings have pushed customers away and created serious barriers to future growth. Dwight’s restaurant, like many others in the area, is at risk if these issues aren’t addressed.
