Support Dusty Nation's Wind Phone Project at Burning Man

Story

Carried by the Wind Dusty Nation, a Seattle-based collaborative of makers and creatives, is bringing a new project to Burning Man called Carried By The Wind and we would like your help. A field of hand-dyed banners blow in the wind, surrounding a small glowing structure. Inside this intimate Alcove is the Wind Phone. This telephone is not connected to any earthly line but is here for those who need to talk to loved ones who cannot hear them, with the wind carrying away their words. Our project scope has outgrown the trailer we were planning to use to bring it to Black Rock City and we need to rent a truck to get it to Nevada safely. The cost for truck and gas is approximately $3500 which puts us over budget and beyond the amount we received as a grant from Burning Man. Carried by the Wind provides a place to pause, reflect, grieve, and connect. The original Wind Phone in Japan allowed survivors of the 2011 tsunami a place to say goodbye to missing loved ones. The Wind Phone is intimate, private and personal. Our crew of 15 people has been working hard to bring a message of beauty and community to this event that means so much to so many. Can you help us get past the finish line? Dusty Nation's ethos is to create a place of beauty, contemplation, and transformation using hand-dyed banners, contrasting with the wood, stone, and fire elsewhere on the playa. Our soft materials bring color, motion, sound, interactivity, and an ephemeral container for experience. Dusty Nation believes in creating contemplative projects with a global message. Over 50% of the lumber used was up-cycled and our project will run completely on solar energy during the event. The banners for this project are dyed using gravity and melting ice to create distinctive marks. As the ice melts, gravity carries dye through the fabrics blending colors in washes, creating beauty out of loss. This process is a reminder of the melting glaciers and sea ice caused by climate change. This loss, in turn, is tied to the Wind Phone, the intangible connection to our missed loved ones, and our global grieving for environmental loss. Any donation helps! We’d like to thank our donors with some really swell swag. We’ve got stickers for any donation! And we’ve extended the gift of our got really, really cool commemorative enamels pins for the first 40 people who donate. Thank you for supporting Carried By The Wind!
