I began writing this book 24 years ago. Granted, most books are finished a lot quicker.
At times I was writing this book. Other days, it was writing me. Too often, I just put down the project, mid-sentence, as I hit one of my own buttons, triggering pain by reliving a hidden yet still raw, experience.
Finally, I am in the finishing phases of this life-long endeavor. And I am reluctantly asking for your help.
Those of you who know me understand that I do not like asking for things. I'm more of a giver than a taker. But this is the culmination of a career, a health journey, a life, and it's a story I feel I need to tell.
For those who don't know me, my career in journalism began as a stringer at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner before making my way east to write at the Washington Star. I was a columnist for more than a decade with Gannett, the world's largest newspaper chain. I also served on the board of the Bucks County Courier-Times.
As executive producer and host of "Dusty Nathan's Winner's Circle," heard on a major Philadelphia radio station and CBS affiliate, I covered the world of sports and entertainment. I was proud to have several exclusives - most notably, one of Johnny Cash's last appearances, and also world-famous jockey Eddie Arcaro. Eagles head coach Ray Rhodes often played co-host on the show, as did Frank Cotolo.
My words have appeared in Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, and New York's Village Voice.
Many of my short stories and poems are published in anthologies. Recently, some have been selected and published internationally in university literary journals.
Here's where you come in: I am self-publishing this book, and the costs involved in editing, publishing, pre-production, and art, have become cost-prohibitive due to a major stroke and a current cancer. I did a little asking and was heartened to find that many of you want to help complete this process.
I'm excited to have you along for this ride, and I humbly thank you for your support. In the spirit of the Golden Rule, my patrons will be hearing directly from me (if they wish) so I can thank them personally.
