Duncan Myers, a longtime friend and high school classmate, has faced a series of serious medical challenges over the past year and a half. In March 2023, Duncan underwent a total colectomy at Riverside Methodist Hospital, followed by months of recovery and several hospital readmissions. Despite these setbacks, he managed to return to work at the post office, showing remarkable determination and resilience. However, Duncan’s health struggles continued, including recurring kidney stones and a rapidly progressing infection in his left foot that ultimately led to the loss of his little toe. More recently, Duncan developed an intestinal blockage that resulted in sepsis and required additional surgery to remove part of his small intestine and place an ileostomy bag. Complications persisted, and another surgery was needed after his ileostomy prolapsed, further impacting his recovery.

Throughout these ordeals, Duncan has relied on the care and support of his elderly mother, who has been doing her best to help him through difficult times. The ongoing medical bills, wound care, and travel for treatment have placed a significant financial burden on Duncan and his family. With his mother as his primary caregiver, daily life has become increasingly challenging, and Duncan’s ability to work and maintain independence has been severely affected.

Prior to his most recent emergency surgery in October, Duncan was hoping he would be a candidate for reconstructive surgery so he might be able to return to work, which would have been January at the earliest. Without reconstruction, he is not permitted to return to work due to USPS rules, which also does not offer short term disability to postal workers. Duncan is known for his good heart, his love of languages, and his dedication to his job at the post office. Now, Duncan’s biggest hope is to regain his independence and return to a more normal life.
