Support Dulce’s Journey to Aid in Mental Health

Hello, my name is Dulce Olmedo. I am a first-generation, self-supported, graduate student at Colorado State University (CSU), pursuing a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT). I was raised in Basalt, Colorado. Due to federal budget cuts, funding for my program has been dramatically reduced. Since financial assistance from the MFT program is not based on need, a lottery system reduces my chances to receive any assistance. I also do not qualify for traditional student loans at a reasonable interest rate. Without receiving University assistance and working multiple jobs, I would not have completed my undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies with concentrations in Prevention and Intervention Sciences and Pre-health) at CSU in 2022.

I have been dedicated to serving in the mental health field since high school where I volunteered for a program supporting the health and mental well-being of youth. I have served as a therapeutic mentor and children’s case manager for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I am bilingual in Spanish and English and bicultural. I want to contribute to the destigmatization of mental health in the Latinx community and serve the disenfranchised. I will not be able to pay back directly the many who have paved the way for me. But using my education and dedicating my life to improving mental health in my community will be my way of giving back.

Any money donated will be used to fund the last year of my master’s program which includes 2 semesters of tuition ($37,000). I will be responsible for paying two summer classes, student fees, and student health insurance (per CSU requirement). The initial deposit of $4,185 for the upcoming fall semester is due September 5. Subsequent monthly payments are due for the same amount throughout the fall and spring semesters. During the upcoming school year, I will continue working to sustain living expenses. Hola, me llamo Dulce Olmedo. Soy un estudiante de posgrado de primera generación, en la Universidad Estatal de Colorado (CSU) y estoy inscrita en un programa de maestría en Terapia Matrimonial y Familiar (TMF). Me crié en Basalt, Colorado. Debido a los recortes federales a las universidades, la financiación de mi programa ha reducido drásticamente. Dado que la ayuda financiera del programa TMF no se basa en la necesidad, un sistema de lotería reduce mis posibilidades de recibir ayuda. Tampoco califico para préstamos estudiantiles tradicionales con una tasa de interés razonable. Sin recibir ayuda universitaria y trabajar en varios empleos, no habría completado mi licenciatura (Licenciatura en Ciencias en Desarrollo Humano y Estudios Familiares con especialización en Ciencias de la Prevención e Intervención y Pre-salud) en CSU en 2022.

Me he dedicado a la salud mental desde la preparatoria, donde participé como voluntaria en un programa que apoya la salud y el bienestar mental de los jóvenes. He sido mentora terapéutica y administradora de casos infantiles para personas con discapacidades intelectuales y del desarrollo. Quiero contribuir a la normalización de la salud mental en la comunidad latina y servir a quienes han sido marginados. No podré pagar directamente a quienes me han abierto el camino. Pero usar mi educación y dedicar mi vida a mejorar la salud mental en mi comunidad será mi forma de devolver.

Todo el dinero donado se utilizará para financiar el último año de mi maestría, que incluye dos semestres de matrícula ($37,000). Seré responsable de pagar dos clases de verano, las cuotas estudiantiles y el seguro médico estudiantil (según los requisitos de CSU). El depósito inicial de $4,185 para el próximo semestre de otoño se debe el 5 de septiembre. Pagos mensuales siguientes por la misma cantidad se realizarán durante los semestres de otoño y primavera. Durante el próximo año escolar, seguiré trabajando para cubrir mis gastos.
