In October 2023, our world was turned upside down when our then 8-year-old son, began experiencing unexplained seizures. What started as a seemingly ordinary day quickly became a nightmare no parent ever expects.

Duane was rushed to Sacred Heart Pediatrics, where his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his transfer to the PICU. After weeks of critical care, his condition required him to be Life Flighted to Seattle Children’s Hospital, where he underwent extensive treatment to stabilize him. We hoped for a quick recovery, but a year later, Duane is still fighting an uphill battle.

He was diagnosed with Autoimmune Encephalitis, a rare condition in which his immune system attacks his brain, causing seizures, neurological complications, and significant challenges to his everyday life. Despite his bravery and resilience, Duane’s journey is far from over. In January, he will begin Phase 1 testing for a brain resection, an intensive process involving further hospitalizations, treatments, and months of monitoring.

The emotional and financial toll of Duane’s condition has been overwhelming. We’ve faced countless trips between our home and the hospitals, mounting bills, and extensive out-of-pocket expenses.
