My name is Emma Martino, and I am a very close friend of Drew Bonwood, we’ve been friends for over 10 years.

Last Sunday, unfortunately, disaster struck when a house fire broke out at Drew’s home in Mission Beach, destroying all of her belongings. The cause is still being investigated, but we are incredibly grateful that a neighbor called 911 right away.

During the fire, no one was home however Drew’s two beloved cats were trapped inside. Sagwa was able to jump from a second-story window just as firefighters arrived and broke the windows. Mina was rescued from inside the house but suffered smoke inhalation and had to be taken to the emergency room later that day, where she stayed overnight in an oxygen tank. Sagwa was missing for 24 hours and was thankfully found near the home the next day, experiencing only soreness in her back and hind legs. We are beyond grateful that no one was seriously injured and that both cats are now recovering well.

The funds raised will help Drew get back on her feet as she navigates a lengthy insurance process, covers veterinary bills, and due to the extent of the damage, the home is not livable forcing her to find a new place to live. She is also using support to replace essential items in the meantime to help life feel a little more normal. Right now, she has lost all of her material belongings.

Drew has always been a consistent grounding presence in my life, and in the lives of so many others. She has shown up for me in moments of crisis without hesitation, offering support when it was needed most. She gives that love freely without judgement. Now, in a moment when she needs support, it means everything to be able to show up for her in return.

We are so thankful for the overwhelming love and support from Drew’s community. Every contribution, no matter the amount, truly makes a difference. Drew is deeply grateful for the kindness, generosity, and care shown during this time.
