Hi everyone! My friend and I recently adopted a Maine Coon kitten named Dr. Pepper, who instantly became the center of our world. We brought him home expecting a healthy baby cat who would grow and thrive with us. Instead, within just a few weeks, he became sick - and we soon learned he has multiple serious, lifelong medical conditions. We were promised a healthy kitten from the breeder, who told us he had been screened and that DNA tests ruled out any genetic heart conditions. So when he became seriously ill just weeks after adoption, it felt devastating - especially when specialists later confirmed his conditions are congenital.
After several vet visits, X-rays, and specialist consultations, we found out that he has:
Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) — a congenital hole in his heart
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) — a progressive, genetic heart disease
Severe heart murmur (grade 5/6)
Lung inflammation and persistent coughing, potentially from pulmonary edema/fluid build up in the lungs due to the heart issue
Multiple rib fractures, discovered on X-ray
Recurrent infections from his compromised health
These heart and lung issues will require lifelong monitoring, medication, and regular echocardiograms with a cardiologist to reduce his risk of early heart failure and to help ensure he can live as long and comfortably as possible. In just 2 months, we’ve already spent thousands on urgent visits, X-rays, specialist exams, cardiologist appointments, echos, medications, and ongoing follow-up appointments. As a full-time graduate student, we did not anticipate facing such severe medical issues so soon after bringing him home, and the unexpected ongoing costs have been difficult to manage. With lifelong care now ahead of him, we want to be able to support him the best we can.
Any help would truly make a difference. Donations will go directly toward his past and next specialist visits and treatment for his chronic lung inflammation and congenital heart conditions. If you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this page means so much to us. We’re deeply grateful for every bit of kindness and encouragement for our fur baby.
