Support Dr. Jaskowiak's Lymphedema Research
Donation protected
My name is Kathy Horvath, and I am so fortunate to be a sixteen-year cancer survivor. I owe my life to Dr. Nora Jaskowiak (who is pictured here with me at another fundraiser), the head of the Surgical Breast Center at the University of Chicago Medical Center. After months of chemo, a double mastectomy, and daily rounds of radiation, I defeated breast cancer. However, the journey doesn't always end there.
Within six months of my treatment, I developed lymphedema in my right arm. For the last fifteen years, I have battled its effects of continual swelling and dozens of cases of Cellulitis, a bacterial infection that affects the deeper layers of the skin and underlying tissue. Sepsis can develop suddenly and spread quickly through the body and can be life threatening if not treated properly.
Nora Jaskowiak, MD, is a highly regarded professor and surgeon focusing on the surgical management of breast cancer, along with endocrine surgery, thyroid cancer and parathyroid disorders. Dr. Jaskowiak is conducting research on the prevention and treatment of lymphedema for cancer survivors.
