Subject: Solicitation of Support – A business proposition
To: A Diverse Range of GoFundMe Donors
Folks, with all humility, I would like to present my business proposition, which is as follows:
Hybrid publishing company has agreed in principle to publish my novel. However, the rub is this: since I am a first-time author, I must pay into the process, and it is substantial, starting at 43K and going up from there. In the book publishing business, this is what is known as a hybrid model.
Because I do not have enough funds in my retirement account to cover costs, I have been soliciting sponsorship from family, relatives, friends, and various business establishments. A couple of local businesses have just recently agreed to be sponsors when they have dedicated funds available. With that said, can I count on you to help me achieve this goal?
Any amount would be greatly appreciated because it all adds up.
Last item, sponsors, depending on circumstances, may be mentioned in the ‘Acknowledgements’ section of the book. Some private donors have already been written into the storyline of the novel, yet I cannot guarantee that for all.
Nevertheless, can I count on your generosity and support to help me achieve my long-standing dream and goal of becoming a first-time fiction novelist?
Very Respectfully,
Bernard Stancati

Dear Hybrid Books Team,
I have an idea for a fictional novel that is comparable in concept to books by Tom Clancy and other similar authors. A published author encouraged me to reach out to Hybrid Books for assistance in helping me move a 20+ year old vision from just a dream to reality.
Before getting into the story, I think it’s important to address my target audience. I designed this fictional story with the goal of casting a wide net to make it appealing to many readers, such as those who enjoy Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler type of books; who enjoy novels laced with romance; who enjoy historical fiction books by Leon Uris and Herman Wouk; who enjoy military types of tales; who enjoy 007 and Impossible Mission stories; those who like futuristic tales such as Dune; and for those who just enjoy fictional stories.
I base my concepts on my 20 plus years in the US Air Force, teaching at the college level, and time working at various defense contractors. Therefore, the book will be supported by a foundation based on reality because much of what is being expressed actually does exist, yet in a different mosaic pattern.
Another point about the storyline is that I intend to leave many questions unanswered. The reason for this is that it helps to keep the book short, and helps to engage the reader to arrive at their own conclusions through their own imaginative thought processes. This format helps to make things more appealing to the reader.
Lastly, the ambiguity in the end will move the reader to a point where they find themselves wanting, longing, and yearning for more to come. Additionally, it opens the door for the spawning of sequels to the original, along with sidebar books. Clancy and Cussler had a talent for doing this. So now to the story.
The novel’s storylines revolve around a futuristic UN chartered organization, some 200 to 300 years plus into the future (circa @2300). The name of this organization is ‘UN International Rescue,’ or UNIR. The inspiration is linked to the premiering of two TV network shows, Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek, and a British TV production, called Thunderbirds, which debuted in the UK in 1965. Incidentally, in researching the Thunderbirds, I discovered that the show inspired the forming of an actual organization in the UK in 1981, the International Rescue Corps.
In this futuristic setting, the reader would find a world, one envisioned by Gene Roddenberry, where there are no more militaries. That is because humanity, having finally learned from its makings, has evolved to a place where armed conflict is now outlawed. Yet such an evolutionary and transformational process cannot just magically happen overnight. Because from a Darwinian perspective, something like that would take time, likewise here.
Nevertheless, a critical examination of my research material revealed a common thread, which is that something of significance happened that became the catalyst, the change agent, e.g., the driving force for change. In the case of UNIR’s story, what type of earth-shaking event, or series of events, would be required to bring about such a monumental shift? Most likely a global catastrophe of Biblical proportions (see Luke 21, 9-11), which is more probable than aliens showing up as in the movies Star Trek - First Contact, and Arrival.
What then would an event of that magnitude look like? Maybe a global pandemic, one worse in magnitude than SARS-CoV-2, caused by a novel virus on the order of MEV-1 from the movie Contagion. Or a combination of things: a novel pathogen X; global starvation, the result of excessive drought and war; global economic collapse; the collapse of authoritative regimes; an ill-begotten preemptive use of a nuclear weapon.
All of which combined would drive the world to the brink of global nuclear war. Further catastrophe is staved off by the emergence of a most unlikely set of players, the Vatican’s Secretariat of State and leadership from the current residing Pope, Francis II from Asia, and both the Saudi Arabian monarchy and Indian Government.
By way of a papal proclamation, supported by the Saudi and Indian governments, an urgent request is sent to the US Secretary of State, and Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, Russia, the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, India, Egypt, South Africa, Israel, and China, summoning all to Rome with the goal of developing a resolution to be presented to The UN Security Council. The document as conceived would basically outlaw armed conflict once and for all. Essentially, what transpires is the resurrection of the ‘Peace /Kellogg-Briand Pact,’ some 371 plus years after its inception.
In support of the Pope’s initiative, guided via collaborative work between the United States, Saudi Arabia, France, Canada, Russia, China, Japan, Germany, and others, the UK’s Ambassador to The UN Security Council makes a bold proposal. He argues for the establishment of a UN chartered organization, to be modeled after one that was established in the UK in 1981, IR Corps. In the view of His Majesty’s government, it was believed that such an organization could be the catalyst/change agent for the transformation of the world’s militaries.
At the request of the UK’s Prime Minister, UK IR Corps was tasked with the drafting of a set of governing documents for this new organization, along with providing a suitable name. Using their own baseline governing documents as a model, the IR Corps’ working group gets this accomplished in short order, along with providing a name, UN International Rescue (UNIR).
Following suit, the US Ambassador to The UN Security Council proposes that the US DoD’s global command structure, with its 11 major combatant commands, should serve as a model for UNIR. In addition, the need for the development of a Combined Unified Command Plan (CUCP) was also presented. Once drafted, the CUCP would be an addendum to UNIR’s governing documents.
Such a document would define and establish the following: the missions and command responsibilities for each of UNIR’s major commands; the geographic or functional areas of responsibilities for each as applicable; the designation of the UN Building complex/campus in NYC as the location for both UNIR’s HQ and associated Command and Control Center (UNIRCC).
Additionally, contained within the CUCP was specific language addressing the fact that for most incidents, yet not all, UNIR would not be the responsible agency in charge, yet would defer its support to the incident commander and associated responsible agency in charge, e.g., FEMA.
These draft documents, plus a resolution to increase the number of permanent member nations from 5 to 10, were then presented to The UN Security Council for a vote. It was unanimous, same for the General Assembly. So, in the fall, circa 2290, UNIR was born. Via the implementation of this bold initiative, the militaries of the world, over many years of painful fits and starts, were transformed. Instrumental to this endeavor were NATO and NORAD, who by leading the way prompted others to follow suit.
So, in a decade plus, the vision set forth in 2290 becomes a reality. To mark the occasion, the UN Secretary General announced that “Today, we are all witnesses to an amazing event in history, where weapons of war have been transformed into weapons for peace. UNIR will now, and forever more will be, a global power for good.”
In the final analysis, what then would make UNIR so extraordinary? It would be the consequence of its innate ability to respond swiftly anywhere on the planet, 24/7, to natural or man-made disasters and emergencies big and small, and everything in between, bringing to bear on a moment’s notice an impressive array/inventory of response and support related equipment and personnel.
The main reason why UNIR can perform these fantastic feats is due in large part to an amalgamation of the following: a unique worldwide command, control, communication, and surveillance architecture; incredible flexibility and innovativeness; a cadre of highly trained, dedicated, and super imaginative people (uniformed and non) from all walks of life; international collaboration; public/private/NGO sector collaboration and super advanced technology of all sorts, all supported by quantum-based AI computer processing.
Over time, because of what UNIR is and who and what it represents, a tremendous amount of goodwill, trust, and support would be generated. Thus, becoming one of the world’s most highly respected, admired, and venerated premier organizations. Yet unfortunately not by all. UNIR, like 007, would have an organizational-based nemesis, called ‘Scorpio.’
While thoughtful consideration has been given this, to include a touch of romance, there is just way too much material to put into this letter. Yet, one last item of interest - the first part of the UNIR story should end with the emergence of a highly contagious and lethal viral pathogen. I have decided on Smallpox, to be released via the Scorpio organization. This organization will be similar in terms of nature, form, function, and scope to the Spectre organization that 007 had to contend with.
My intent is to use this incident as a vehicle for demonstrating UNIR’s unique and robust surveillance and response capabilities. Thus, setting the stage for a possible follow-on to the initial book.
To the Hybrid Books Editing Team, and per the message from Mr. John Doe, Co-Founder, President, and CEO of Hybrid Books, I am hoping your team, and the support of generous donors, will help me achieve my dream of becoming a first time book author and fictional novelist.
Very Respectfully,
Dr. Bernard Stancati
