Doug, an Indian cowboy recognized internationally for his expertise, teaching, and community involvement, has passed away. His contributions are remembered through stories and tributes from individuals who knew him, especially his family. At rodeo events, Doug frequently assisted others, provided guidance, and supported new riders. He spent time educating newcomers about horsemanship and shared his knowledge of Blackfeet culture and the outdoors. His actions had a lasting effect on those around him.
Doug experienced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive and incurable brain disorder commonly linked to repeated head trauma. CTE develops gradually and manifests in symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, impaired decision-making, and changes in mood or behavior. These effects can impact daily functioning and well-being. Recognizing the impact of CTE provides context for Doug's experiences and may foster understanding for others affected by similar conditions.
Doug is survived by his children Jozee, Hadlee, and Talon; his wife, mother, siblings, and extended family and friends. In response to his passing, donations have been made, and a GoFund account was established to benefit his children. This will also help his oldest daughter Jozee as she follows her dream of making it to the Indian National Finals Rodeo and the love both her and her father had of the rodeo trail.
