Support Douglas on his mobility journey

Donation protected
Friends:

As some of you know, my brother, Douglas Rector, had a necessary surgery for the removal of a lipoma (non-cancerous tumor) in his spinal cord in January of 2023 in California. The very rare tumor was causing numbness in his right leg, and weakness in his left leg. The goal of surgery was to improve his leg function. However, the surgery was not a success in that regard. As a result, Doug has lost the use of both legs, is unable to walk; relying on a wheelchair for mobility, and at this time cannot work to support himself.

Due to his California home not being wheelchair accessible, his California health insurance denying any further benefits, and no immediate family there to care for Douglas' pressing needs, our family relocated him to Florida in July. By clinical recommendation, here he could continue treatment and seek care at Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville. He is currently living with my 89-year-old father and my sister, Dana, who have needs of their own, but assisting as they can. Through a donation, on October 2, 2023, Douglas began attending the Spinal Cord Injury Day Treatment Program (SCI). While he has made GREAT progress with increasing leg mobility and strength, his medical doctors believe he would benefit from an additional two weeks to give him the best chance at living a more independent life and regaining the use of his legs. Clinical evidence has shown that the best chance for regaining function in his legs would be within the first 9-12 months following surgery; this is now his 10th month post-operatively. Time is of the essence. These additional weeks at the SCI center with intensive rehabilitation are imperative. However, our family needs financial assistance to continue to care for him and pay for these services and additional ongoing expenses related to his specific condition.

Would you please prayerfully consider financially assisting us in covering 2 additional weeks at the SCI Day Program which is 6 hours a day, 5 days a week? The self-pay fee is $450 per day. Our GoFundMe goal for Doug is $10,000: $4,500 for the remaining 2 weeks at SCI plus $5,500 for his ongoing medical and living expenses thereafter.

Douglas is so very grateful for all of the financial, emotional, spiritual, and physical support he has been given since moving to Florida to heal his body.

On behalf of the entire Rector family, Thank you so much for considering giving toward Doug’s recovery journey.
