Ok about 9 months have gone by so let’s see what’s changed, I now live in Houston, in a group home that not really equipped to handle someone in my situation. I go thru physical rehab, everything should be rainbows and roses but it’s not, my older sister is battling cancer and she’s doing better than I am. Right now I’m having to pay for supply’s out of my own pockets and that is killing my budget the most. Currently I need money to cover my regular bills then I can worry about the wants and dream for things like a mobility scooter or a hoyer lift. So if you could donate anything to my cause I’d be grateful and it world help me sleep at night.

Help Douglas Nelson Reclaim His Health and Dignity

My name is Douglas Nelson, and I’m humbly reaching out for your support. In August 2024, my life changed in an instant. As I stood up to start my morning, I blacked out and collapsed. When I regained consciousness, EMTs and firefighters surrounded me—alert, urgent, and worried. I was rushed to the hospital with a serious knee injury and alarming respiratory issues that led to a diagnosis requiring mandatory oxygen support. Now, I rely nightly on a VOCSN machine—a next-generation CPAP device—to keep my airway from constricting as I sleep.

My discharge from the hospital didn’t signal relief. I was given a directive: apply for Medicaid. I’d already applied for Social Security, and the hospitalization helped push it through, offering temporary financial relief. However once that support was spent on medical bills, I was left to navigate a system that consistently failed me. Medicaid accepted me at first—but I was placed under WellPoint coverage, which did nothing to help. No doctor in my city would see me under that insurance. When reevaluation time came, I was denied coverage altogether for the simple facts that I wasn’t old enough and that I was now receiving Social Security Income.

In the months that followed, I struggled with rehab access while red tape ground the system to a halt. My muscles atrophied from inactivity. Standing isn’t something I can just do anymore—I’m relearning it, slowly and painfully. My daily life has been reduced to using a bucket and puppy training pads for basic bodily functions because I can’t access the proper hygiene support. This isn’t just undignified—it’s dangerous. The pressure sores and infection risks are constant, and the physical pain is compounded by mounting depression. I’ve fallen through the cracks simply because I don’t meet arbitrary age requirements.

Through all of this, I’ve tried to hold onto my pride. But I also know when I’m overwhelmed. Right now, I need help. I’m asking for your kindness and generosity to fund essential items like a hospital bed, hygiene products, medical supplies, and any equipment that can give me back some independence and comfort. My size is also a factor in all of this so I have to get one equipped for my weight.
