Support Doreen's Journey to Safe Housing
Donation protected
Doreen was born and raised in New York and is a Harlem resident of 20 years working towards stable housing and a better quality of life.
Doreen is a pillar of the Harlem community and an essential part of We the People's Saturday mutual aid distribution. No matter rain, heat, or freezing cold, Doreen is always on the corner (and always early!) at 124th and Lex. She shows up to give out free clothes and food, checking up on people and gathering supplies for them.
Doreen takes care of everyone around her and now she needs our support in taking care of her! Doreen is a victim of parental and domestic violence who is now elderly and disabled so unable to work. On the daily, she struggles to afford her groceries and basic needs. We’ve spent months working tirelessly within the New York benefits system to get her SSD, food support, and affordable housing, but the process is slow and so far unsuccessful. After falling behind in taxes due to violence in her home life, Doreen has been consistently punished by ineffective systems and raising prices in her neighborhood. Doreen is looking to have a more complete fresh start!
Funds raised here will go to paying off her debt, paying for medical bills, and then supporting Doreen in moving into safe, stable housing with her family.
You can learn more about the work we do at We the People at https://www.instagram.com/wethepeople_nyc/. Our Saturday distros run 1-3pm -- come out for free food, resources, clothes and to give Doreen your love!
