In December, 2022, I was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), a virus that left me paralyzed from the neck down. I spent 9 months in the hospital and another 16 months in rehab; I was intubated, had a tracheotomy, and was confined to bed for over a year. With a great deal of determination and faith, I ultimately got off the vent, breathed on my own, and relearned to walk.
When I returned home in the summer of 2024, I was still recovering from GBS. My muscles were deconditioned, my nerves hadn’t fully recovered, and I had lost 40 pounds. With weekly physical and occupational therapy sessions, I slowly began to regain my strength, coordination, and balance.
But just as I was starting to make significant progress, this January, I came down with COVID. Because I have COPD, a lung condition that causes breathing problems, my case was severe. I was admitted to the ICU, and once again find myself intubated and unable to move my body.
My family has been doing everything they can over the last two years to take care of medical bills and household expenses, but now with this new situation, we need your support.
If you’re able, please consider donating. Any amount, big or small would make a huge difference. Even if you can’t, please share this link with others. It would be of immense help to us.
I’m committed to getting off the vent. I’m committed to walking again. And with your help, I hope to get there faster.
With my (our) deepest gratitude,
Don
