As many of you now know, my mom Donna was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in January. The diagnosis was a shock and the timing of it has really been a hardship. The same week my mom found out about the cancer, she was meant to move to California to take on a new job in her field of advertising. She had already moved out of her house and quit her existing job when her doctor confirmed the diagnosis. She had to abruptly cancel her California plans and suddenly found herself homeless and jobless with cancer.
We are incredibly grateful to know that following her surgery and a year of treatments, she is expected to have 90%+ chance of full recovery. Right now our focus is on:
1) completing cancer treatments
2) finding her somewhere to live
During the winter, while undergoing surgery and recovery, she stayed with several different family and friends. It became incredibly difficult as most of us rent and she has two dogs, one of which is a Great Dane. Now that it is summer and the weather is warm, she is living in a tent while renting a campsite on private property in Duncan so that she doesn’t have to continue couch-surfing and she can be with her dogs.
At this time, she receives chemotherapy every week. She is eager to support herself financially but the side affects of her treatments prevents her from being able to take-on/commit to a new job. She is out of savings and is now being financially supported by myself and the inconsistent sales of her belongings. Once she has completed this round of chemo, she will begin radiation daily. During radiation she hopes to stay at the Cancer Lodge in Victoria.
I have set up this gofundme page to ask for assistance in supporting her during her treatments and recovery. The funds we hope to raise will pay for her seventeen-day-stay at the Cancer Lodge as well as contribute to her cost of living while she gets out of the tent and back on her feet.
Thank you for taking the time to read this far and thank you for contributing in any way you can! Asking for help is not easy. This entire experience has been a humbling one but we are beyond grateful to have the support of our community, family and friends.
Lots of love and many thanks,
Bonnie
