Support Dom's Family: Humanitarian Killed by Gangs in Haiti

I had the immense privilege of knowing and working closely with Dominique "Dom" Petit-Papa at a human rights organization partnered with UNICEF in Haiti. Over 14 years, Dom became more than a colleague—he was family. He was like a brother to me, and I'm honored to be the godfather of his firstborn son. Dom was a beacon of hope for countless children and families, dedicating his life to uplifting others.

A Life Dedicated to Others

In the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake, Dom led tireless efforts to reunite lost children with their families, many of whom were mistakenly assumed to be orphans. He fought against child trafficking and established community-run child-friendly spaces in displacement camps, touching the lives of tens of thousands of children. Beyond his humanitarian work, Dom founded an elementary school in Port-au-Prince, providing vulnerable children with access to education.

A Tragic Loss

On May 29, Dom's life was tragically cut short when gangs attempted to kidnap him right in front of the school he had dedicated his life to. He always told me he would rather die than let gangs extort his family and friends. True to his word, he stood his ground and was killed for it. He leaves behind his loving wife and three young children who now face an uncertain and dangerous future.
